How To Apply For An Immigration Resident Visa

An immigration resident visa is a visa that allows a foreign national to live and work in the United States indefinitely as long as they maintain legal status. To qualify for an immigration resident visa, you must meet certain requirements including having a valid passport, being in good health, and not having any criminal convictions.

The process of applying for an immigration resident visa is different depending on your nationality and whether you are a national of a select few countries or a general immigrant.

Nationals of select countries may be able to apply directly with the U.S. Department of State (DOS), while other applicants must first obtain an immigrant visa and then follow the same application process as non-immigrant visa holders. There are two types of resident visas: family-sponsored and employment-based.

To qualify for a family-sponsored resident visa, you must be sponsored by a family member who is already living in the United States as a lawful permanent resident, or has been admitted as a refugee and is awaiting final approval to become a lawful permanent resident.

You must also meet certain requirements, including having no criminal convictions, being able to financially support yourself and your family members, and having no serious health problems that would make it difficult for you to live in the United States.

To qualify for an employment-based immigrant visa, you must have skills that will help fill an available job in the United States, meet certain requirements related to your profession, and have sponsorship from an employer who can attest to your qualifications.
